Furnace

Winter is slowly setting in, and you must prepare for it before it strikes. In other words, you should make sure that you maintain your furnace before winter takes full stride. Below are a few preventative tips for your furnace for the upcoming winter preparation.

Change the Furnace Filter

In general, you should be replacing one-inch filters every month because they are quick to catch plenty of dirt and debris. This preventative measure is the most important as it contributes vastly to the HVAC system’s performance and energy consumption.

Remove Flammable Objects from the Furnace

Your furnace is usually located in a separate area of your home. These areas are generally basements or storage rooms. Make sure that you do not place flammable objects near the furnace. This is because it can expose your house to the risk of a fire.

Clean Ducts

If you have some kind of home renovation going on, then this measure can be very important. If you are remodeling your kitchen, flooring, or carpeting, then you can expect your ducts to get very dirty.

If you are also not replacing your filter more often, it will result in the coil getting very dirty. It is important to note that duct cleaning is not something that you can easily do yourself, and you will have to hire duct cleaners instead.

Along with the ducts, you should also clean your evaporation coils as well. Operationally, the coil is one of the more important components. Thus, if you do hire duct cleaners, do not forget to have them clean the coils along.

Make sure that your return vents are always open and not blocked by anything. Furthermore, you should also ensure that most of your supply register is also open. The return grills are usually the components that suck the air inwards.

Check Thermostat Program and Batteries

Plenty of thermostats have batteries, and many users are not aware of that fact. Usually, if the battery is low in power, the thermostat displays a low battery indication. Unfortunately, most people tend to overlook that notification and experience that their furnace has stopped heating.

Other times, the low battery symbol is faulty and appears after the furnace stops heating. Therefore, the safe thing to do is to check your thermostat’s batteries and see what kind of batteries it has.

Moreover, if you have a programmable thermostat, find out how it works. If your thermostat starts to shift to the program mode instead of the manual hold, then your temperatures will begin to change. If you have any questions about your furnace system, make sure to contact us.
